My oldest two have started school this week already and surprisingly I did not have that ugly mom cry. Last year I was that mom who was wondering will her kids make it back home safe and sound. That mom who wanted to email their kid’s teacher every hour. That mom who is waiting out by the window looking out for her kids to arrive back from school. You know that stalker mom who can’t keep her face from the front view of her window.
I say this because the first week of school was hard on me last year. No denying that. But fast forward to now I have a third grader and another in Kinder who are more independent than ever. I am just desperately wanting a bit more time to spend with them when we mix our school and my work schedule all together. And because they are kids, their energy has no limits even after a long day at school.
Sometimes I feel we can do more after school and I get this constant guilt. We should do more together and take advantage of the small moments we get to spend with our kids. Depending on the day we will plan preparing a snack together in the kitchen counter. They usually arrive home hungry and that’s when the chaos at home starts.
MAKE A YOGURT BAR
A fun way I have started to welcome them home is making a FAGE yogurt bar. It fills their tummies, it is healthy, and serves a large group all at the same time. Best of all it is DELICIOUS. I call that winning in my books! As a child I remember delighting in all of the options when my mom and I did our own yogurt bar. It was the best after school memories my siblings and I had. Now as a mom, I love creating a self service bar choices for them to pick them. It gives them more independence and a sense of taking the leader role.
START WITH YOUR FAVORITE YOGURT
I love using FAGE Total 2% Greek Yogurt, it comes in different sizes. I usually go with the large container so it lasts us longer. We prefer the 2% since it has a creamy texture while still being low in fat. I love that it is all natural greek strained yogurt, Non-GMO, Gluten Free, preservative free, no added sugars, protein rich, made with only milk and live active yogurt cultures, and a good source of calcium which is what our active kids need in their daily diet.
CREATE A FUN TOPPINGS BAR
I give them a variety of several toppings where everyone can customize their own bowls to their own tastes. I love providing a variety of toppings so it can be fresh and to their own personal choice. Here are a few combinations you can pick from and try yourself.
- strawberries
- blueberries
- bananas
- almonds
- blackberries
- peaches
- granola
- chia seeds
- coconut flakes
My favorite yogurt bowl to make is FAGE Total 2% Greek Yogurt + teaspoon of honey with strawberries, peaches, blueberries, and granola with a drizzle of few almonds to top it with.
And even on busy school mornings it works out great for us. By preparing the toppings ahead of time you can save time in the morning and really just sit back and enjoy the half hour you get with them before the bus shows up. I lay everything in the kitchen counter and watch them take over the kitchen area as they create and make their own.
Hoping these ideas and delicious FAGE yogurt bowls inspire you to go and create your own with your kids. Have fun doing it together! Whether if it’s for breakfast before school or a quick easy after school snack it’s a fun way to create your own meal for kids to enjoy being their own boss- even if it’s for a little bit. (That’s until we take over and start cleaning up the mess they leave behind)
A yogurt bar seems like the perfect afternoon snack & making it a “bar” where they build their own is so smart! I would love to do that lol the toppings you chose all sound (& look) absolutely delicious. I need to try some coconut flakes next time as the finishing touch! The photos are beautiful, too! 🙂
I love this idea! This is a great breakfast in the morning before a busy day! My bridesmaids actually did this for me the morning of my wedding day!
I love this idea it’s smart and fast. Thanks for the idea.
This is such a great idea! To only does it make the morning routine easier, but it also lets the kids feel a sense of independence. What will I do without all the pop tart wrappers in the back of my car. Lol.
Yogurt is so refreshing and delicious! A yogurt bar is such a fun way to serve it too.
